Sholing Valleys Study Centre

& Miller's Pond Nature Reserve

A Bit About the Nature Reserve

Spanning around 20 acres, Miller's Pond is one of Southampton's largest and most diverse Local Nature Reserves. Since 1988, Sholing Valleys Study Centre has been working as a registered charity to preserve Miller's Pond and it's surrounding areas, whilst educating the public about the unique environment and wildlife found here.

Come join in with outdoor tasks and help to look after local wildlife.

Volunteer Day with Freshwater Habitats Trust

Sunday 31st of July 2022

If you are thinking that you'd like to come and help us out this summer, this is the time to do it!
This will be our last conservation day for the summer. The next two will be in late September.

We have another activity packed day for everyone!

The reserve is run by Volunteers, and we would not be able to manage without your help. We appreciate all of you.

Conservation tasks:
- Path widening. During the summer, pathways can become overgrown.
- Litter picking. The less litter there is the less likely people are to drop it!
- Invasive species removal. Sadly, there are some plants that are not welcome. We have to do our best to prevent them from overgrowing. This month: Himalayan Balsam
- Culvert clearing. Making sure the two streams leading to the pond don’t get blocked up.

Nature Watch Club

Sunday 31st of July 2022

Naturewatch Club

Our club for children takes place on the last
Sunday of the month (with the exception of August and
December). It runs from 10.30am-12.00pm, with sessions costing £1.50 per child, or free to members - membership for the whole year costs just £6. Better still, the first session is free so there’s nothing to lose in coming along to give it a try.

Naturewatch sessions encourage children’s interest in
nature through fun educational activities while helping
to raise awareness about the natural world. Activities

  • Nature Walks

  • Plant, animal and fungi identification

  • Seasonal arts and crafts

  • Outdoor games and challenges

Children under 5 must be accompanied by a parent or carer and those age 5 or over can stay for the session in the care of our Naturewatch Volunteers.  We advise everyone to 'dress for mess', with coats, walking shoes or wellies in cold weather and sun hats and sunscreen in warmer weather, as some of the session is always spent outside.
